Michael Punke has done a great job here with this meticulously researched tragedy of the Fetterman massacre. The beginning of Red Cloud's war against the encroaching whites and the US Army which galvanized the tribes, the Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho into coming together to defend themselves and their lands. The outcome, both now and later, is never at question, but Punke weaves a masterful tale of the individuals, both winner and loser, and their motives and emotions that make this an outstanding novel. Highly recommended. This was an interesting perspective from the author based on the characters from Red Clouds War. Really enjoyed this and the authors notes at the end really summarized what we know for sure and what the author envisioned in his own thoughts about The Fetterman Massacre. Awesome book to read! Also check out Last Stand if you want another lesson in western history from this author.
